First woman gay prime minister?

Well - a lot going on in Iceland these days....the nation has been very unhappy with our government so there have been regular demonstrations (some a little bit too close to riots but others peaceful and fine) outside the parliament and other official buildings relating to the government and central bank etc. A week ago - the two large political parties that form our government were not in agreement so they ended their collaboration and the government resigned = the government failed.

Today a new government was introduced which is formed by the smaller political parties to the left - so the right partie (Sjálfstæðisflokkurinn) is for the first time in 18 years not a part of the ruling government. Our president has named Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir prime minister - being the first woman prime minister in Iceland...she happens to be gay as well which has been the main topic on CNN and news all over the world. Also, there are just as many woman as men in the new government... apparently we suck at a lot of things but at least we're in front when it comes to gender equality!

We were really surprised to get our luggage this week from Malaysia that we sent off a looong time ago!!! Finally we got our books and a few things that we've missed a lot.

The weather has been really "Icelandic" and winterlike lately...there's been a lot of snow and the skiing - areas have been open for the past few days. Óskar went snowboarding a few days ago and hopefully the weather will stay like this for a while! Also starting to see some northern lights...long time no see!

Otherwise, we've just been relaxing in our cozy new apartment..we feel really good here. We had Sigga and Hemmi over on thursday - they're moving to Australia tomorrow where Hemmi's gonna work and Sigga is starting her masters in Sexology. Niiiiice....on friday we had dinner with Agnes and family (Oskars' sister) and said goodbye to Óli cause he is moving to New York for a few months...and then yesterday my dad, Ásta and sisters came to Reykjavík to our apartment (from Selfoss where they live) for a nice family day where we ended up playing cards and drinking red wine and stuff. All in all a cozy family weekend.

Since we did not study very hard over the weekend (hehemm) we're gonna set camp in our livingroom and catch up on everything for the next few days!

And pictures will come soon...we have apparently lost the charger to my small camera but we're on it.

Have a nice week...
